Catching the Fall Sunshine!!

In a recent post, the Artful Parent, shared her idea for making beautiful fall suncatchers.   I loved the idea of walking around and collecting fall leaves to make these beauties with my littles.  Unfortunately, in our region of the country we don't get to many autumn colors and falling leaves.  Our leaves pretty much turn from green to brown and are extra crispy not at all translucent.
This is how I adapted the idea to work for us.

Here is what you need:

  • Paper Plates
  • Contact Paper
  • Construction Paper
  • Glue (I went with glue squirted into a bowl for this one rather than a glue stick)

Step 1: Get Sticky
I cut a circle out of a paper plate.  The I placed clear contact paper on underside of the plate.

Step 2: Paint with Fall Colors
I gave the littles the paper plates along with some brushes and a paint palate full of fall colors: Deep Organge, Yellow, Brown and Red.  Once they were done painting I hung them up to dry.

Step 3: Add Leaves
After the paintings dried I sealed the plate painting with another piece of contact paper and plate.  Then I gave the kids some pre-cut construction paper leaves, dried leaves, and other found objects we collected from outside. The little one's loved sticking the paper and objects on their suncatchers.  The only things that really stayed on were the construction paper leaves...but the process was still fun and the result is lovely!!

N.B. Be sure you let the paint dry before sealing it in the other layer of contact paper.  If the paint is not dry it most likely never will.  We love to seal paints into contact paper for a fun sensory/color play activity.  Check out our Mini Masterpiece: Window Leaves Project to see how we do it.

Bountiful Blogs: Mama Natural

One of my friends introduced me to a new mom the other day as her slightly crunchy mom friend.  I had no idea what this meant.  Then she explained … you know you’re a little bit granola, health nutty, organic and preservative free.  I guess it was meant as a complement, because this mom was looking for advice on transitioning to a more organic diet at her child’s pediatrician’s recommendation.  There is no doubt that venturing into the world of Natural Living can be overwhelming!  There is so much information to absorb and seemingly ever change health facts.  One of the first blogs, I told her about was Mama Natural.  I found this blog when I was pregnant with my son and fell in love.  Believe me, there is virtually no natural living topic that Mama Natural hasn’t or won’t cover.  If I’m slightly crunchy … she is super extra crunchy in an awesome way!

Honey, Our Veggies are Home!!

A few mornings ago, I woke up expecting a special delivery.   No, it’s not yet my due date.  It’s not pizza, Chinese food, or the UPS man.  It is locally grown, farm fresh veggies!!  I am, at the same time, both irrationally excited and intensely skeptical about the whole experience!  I love eating locally grown, organic foods; but even the most avid organic shopper has to confess that convenience and farm fresh, organic foods are not words you typically see together.  All that could be about to change for me with the help of a local company, Palmetto Organics!!

Bountiful Blogs: Let the Children Play

In the wee small hours of the morning, I found myself scouring a beautiful and inspiring blog, Let the Children Play.  The blog features beautiful photography and fantastic ideas for exploring creativity and the environment.  It completely opened my eyes to the possibility for outdoor play reaching beyond playground, sandboxes, and play structures!

What Kind of Mom Are YOU?

The day I became a mom I realized a simple truth that nearly all moms share, we want the absolute best for our children.  Yes, I watch the news and know that plenty of exceptions exist out there.  However, most of the moms I have met along the way, genuinely love and want the best for their little ones.  So how do we end up subdivided into so many categories? Marsupial or Stroller Mom, Breastfeeding or Bottle feeding, Stay at Home Mom (SAHM) or Working Out of the Home Mom (WOHM), Co-Sleeping Mom or Independent Sleeping Mom.
